YOUNG FASHION DESIGNERS IN MALAYSIA. WHO ARE THEY?
One of the fashion designers who grew up in
Malaysia is Datuk Rizalman Ibrahim. He was born in Georgetown, Penang. During
his was childhood, he said “I loved to draw using pencils and watercolours, I
thought about graphics but at that time it seemed many people going into it so
I jumped into fashion (Bullis, 2000, p. 92). He is interested in handling
fabrics and from there he won a competition for the first time. Rizalman has
been involved in fashion for 20 years and he has achieved many awards. For
instance, Stylo Star of The Year Award 2008, Best Young Designer for Anugerah
Pesona Tenun Berita Harian 2011, Piala Seri Endon. Although, he is a star in
fashion industry, Rizalman has not forgotten his heritage in his design. He
always concentrates on Malay traditional and contemporary style as Figure 1
shows. Furthermore, he has established his own boutique, Rizalman Haute Couture
on 2009 when his brand becomes popular. In 2012, he has collaboration with
hypermarket chain. He see this collaboration as a bonus as Tesco wishes to work
with designers for believe in doing what they want.
